We Reunite and Join Forces Once Again

Melodie and I grew up in middle of nowhere Richmond Hill, Ga. Atleast back then it was nothing to brag about, and served as the back drop of our awkward early years in life. I remember she had a beach ball with a globe printed on it, and after school we would listen to anthem house music and draw all over it in sharpie the places we wanted to go one day. The day we could get out, finally get out of there. Desperate we were most of the time back then for excitement. For life, maybe as we saw it on t.v. but however we knew that the cradle of what we were looking for wasn't there. As time went on we began to grow up, and grew up together as best friends. Once attempting to form a band when we were very young. We knew our mission was to be able to express to the world ,the people we knew we were inside. New romantic-esque dark over the top clothing gave way to, spikes and patches, and eventually to bright plastic jewelry. Covering each other in glitter and fur, dying our hair and taking on pseudo names to "define" our personality. Now we felt we were ready to make something of being seen and being what we wanted to be. Our roads along the way during our journey has spanned many miles, but some how we still end up somewhere near our home town. y Many years later we met Dax at a club in downtown Savannah called Velouria . Never will I forget the memories that were made between us all during our time there. As I type this I'm getting misty eyed. Dax, Melodie and I became fast friends, as well as everyone else that worked there and frequented the club (you know who you are), we became family. One bright, shiny, colorful in personality and appearance, weird little family. When Dax called me and informed me he was free for Halloween I squealed with excitement. NOT ONLY was he one of my very best friends, BUT also has been crowned Atlanta's Best Drag Queen, two years in a row. Of course I could squeeze him in. After our conversation I sat back and began to reminisce. The images of all the pictures of us that were taken back then started to roll through my mind, and now I'd like to share some of those awesome memories with you all. Yes these might make you laugh... and thats ok.

EZ Bake Coven Weekend of Magic!

The Savannah chapter of the EZ Bake Coven, had a great weekend. Our very first Naughty Nautical Nite with Dame Darcy went over so well I cant even begin to explain my satisfaction with how it all turned out.
Everyone came dressed up! Everyone had such a great time! Also, we're starting to get alot of attention, so anticipation for the halloween show is already starting to mount.
We even got up the next day and went to Pagan Pride Day bright and early at Emmet Park on Bay Street.
There we sold hand made and D.I.Y. arts and crafts. We even managed to hold off the rain long enough for Darcy to perform around 7pm, later on in the early evening. We gathered more email contacts for those interested in joining our mailing list which is also very exciting. Next step for the EZ Bake Coven, we're planning a lolita tea party! Gosh, what am I going to wear?...
If you, or anyone you may know would like to join the EZ Bake Coven Savannah just email me at Anitanevent@gmail.com and I'll be glad to send over more info to you.

AHOY! Nautical Lolitas!

Lolita fashion is very D.I.Y. which is why I love it so. The look can be easily adapted to any theme you can think of. One of the more ever growing lolita looks is "nautical lolita" or "sailor lolita". This look can include  sailor collars and ties, sailor hats and stripes. This look is not to be confused with "seifuku" which is the Japanese sailor-style school uniforms. Another recently popular substyle is "pirate lolita", which is very heavy on the jewelry.

Adam Ant the Pirate and Daryl Hannah The Mermaid
It's the new harvest moon (a full moon) and I showed the crew of Naughty Nautical Nite the Stand and Deliver video from Adam Ant to give them inspiration for young aspiring lads as to what to wear for punk rock pirate D.I.Y. Couture.
Little did I know in doing so I would crack open my heart and brain so that for the last 4-5 days, day and night I can't get images of Adam Ant out of my mind! I'm working all day every day and all the other usual million shenanigans, but the whole time his songs play in my mind. Every spare moment I have, I watch his videos on repeat and Vincent found a video documentary on him that made it worse. At night I can barely sleep and when I do, I dream about Adam Ant. Jesus!
I've been crying about his ill mental health, while meditating to get over whatever chasm in my brain that video caused! I'm crying for his brain, but maybe I should look in the mirror. (like Adam Ant in the video Stand and Deliver...Aaarrrg!)
Anyways back to reality. I've always been on a Daryl Hanna kick, anyone with eyes in their head can see that. But now I realize after drawing the two Daryl and Adam LOOK ALIKE. They have the same forehead, nose, jawline, eyes, everything. My psychoanalysis of all this is that I saw Stand and Deliver and Splash in the same year, 1984, when I was 13. Clearly, these two made me the responsible adult I am today, who thinks she is a mermaid/pirate and does art and faggy cabarets while living in a dream world about what it would be like to sail the Caribbean. I think this is some unfinished business from my childhood (but what the heck isn't). Oh I just realized something, this is the same year I saw The Last Unicorn too...I'm totally fucked.

A special thanks to Daniela Ballone for this beautiful portrait she made of me! Isn’t it wonderful!

..And Now, For Something Different

Many people come to Savannah wondering where "is it at?" You know.. what ELSE is there to do besides go downtown and become a drunken yah who. Theres plenty hiding underneath the glamour of being able to drink outside. For locals its a little easier to find then it is for an unsavvy tourists. Being pushed towards River Street and Paula Deens restaurant (thats why were flyering the hotels downtown) because, we know that the REAL REASON they came here was to see some utter and total weirdness, a drag queen and have an aburdly awesome time. Ladies and Gentlemen I bring you Naughty Nautical Nite.

Naughty Nautical Nite is almost upon us and the S.S. Fun Ship Cabaret will be docking at Tantra Lounge soon (September 23rd) in Savannah Ga. In-case you didn't know Naughty Nautical Nite was started in NYC by Dame Darcy and Jessica Delfino, and is the live action show that is put on by the EZ Bake Coven. The EZ Bake Coven is an artist collective with an art salon aspect to how it runs, and a sewing bee concept to arting in a group together. So when the idea came up to start a cabaret show, everyone decided to make it a nautical themed night that can adapt other themes within it as well. For instance one NNN was Alice in Wonderland themed and everything looked like Alice in Wonderland, except underwater. A cabaret show can include comedy, singing, dancing, theater, burlesque, performance art and of course don't forget a master of ceremony. When Darcy moved to Savannah she began looking for a way to start another Naughty Nautical Nite and another chapter of the EZ Bake Coven to go along with it. For the event planned to take place at Tantra  its going to be just nautical themed to kick it off ,with plans to adapt a Halloween theme for the October show. Who knows what we're in-store for Darcy informed me that at one NNN in NYC, a girl did a burlesque routine dressed up as a sexy fetus. With a bubble surrounding her body and a cord from her belly button to the bubble acting as the umbilical cord, she stripped teased her way out. Listed below is the facebook invitation to the Savannah event. As well as a link to the facebook group. Stay tuned for a postings from these guys profiling a featured performer and info everyday leading up to the party. Also heres a blog update from Dame Darcy herself!

 ^v^ Hot Witches ^v^

Yes, you heard it right folks, DD.com is going through a big re-Vamp (pun intended) which means, very soon, new and old graphic novels and comics will be available to download onto kindle etc. I am workin’ my little witchy fingers down to the skeleton bone to bring you more new spooky fairytales. Here is an example of a new one... Love Dame Darcy

The Salt Maiden
Lets turn back the clock to a time when clocks didn't exist. The earth was an orb as it is today, but it had no water, and the creatures that now live in the ocean were clearly visible squirming around in the mud, flapping their long slimy tentacles pointlessly in vain.

Above all this mess shone the beautiful face of The Moon. She looked down with interest, disgust and pity at the pathetic loathsome beasts below and slowly turned in her orbit. Currently she is made of moon dust and rock, but then she was an egg made from smooth white salt that had not solidified quite yet.

She rotated and as she did, thin strands of moonlight wafted down upon the earth and entangled it like spider webs. Months passed by and eventually the egg began to crack. It took time eternal as we perceive it, but to her it was but a few moments. From the crack slowly emerged a beautiful baby made entirely of salt. Her skin was white, smooth and luminous and her hair lay flat and still against her head for there was no breeze on the moon.

In contrast, her eyes were dark and as deep and black as the endless universe surrounding her. The tiny glints of starlight reflecting back the shine she saw. Her salt heart would beat, counting the passing of time and thus insisting her growth but she had no need for lungs on the moon's airless surface.

Kindergoth<< Kinderwhore<< Gothic Lolita:The Origin of Doll-Like Fashion

Lolita fashion for the most part seems to be a Japanese youth subculture, but what are the origins of this look and where did it start? This topic has been debated by many. Some say it all started with  Angelic Pretty, Formerly "Milk and Pretty". A Japanese fashion house that started in the 1970's. Victorian influenced, their focus was on modesty, designing knee length skirts and dresses with a "cupcake" shape. Surely the Japanese weren't the only ones on this new curve of fashion. Other designers such as Bib, ChloĆ©, and Ossie Clark created their own take on the soft, feminine, and romantic style in the 70's. So who are the children of this era that were inspired by the look only to take it to the next level. Jared Gold born in 72,started creating fashion since 92, surely had to have infused these images with inspiration of where he grew up in Idaho. Prairiesque? Victorian? get it? ok its conjecture on my part but he also grew up with Dame Darcy. For me in my mind its all coming together now. Dame Darcy known worldwide as an illustrator, writer, fine artist, musician, cabaret mermaid, and lolita fashion plate. She told me that she began "dressing like a doll" when she was a youth and a teenager. In love with the prettiness of dolls and the many different ways you could dress them in their doll clothes. Darcy said she wasn't allowed to have Barbies, but was encouraged by her mother to instead make her own dolls and doll clothes. Ok I'm getting it now, we have Jared Gold pushing this look beginning in the 90's and Dame Darcy who has been published by Fantagraphics since the 90's. We have the Fashion Designer, and the Artist, the other component to this equation is the Musician, the other important influence on any trend or fashion wave of its time. Its always been a pop culture tradition to look to musicians as a fashion influence. In the early to mid 90's the "Kinderwhore" wave began to crest, and before you knew it Lolita like looks were being worn by almost every young girl and young woman, influenced by its new riot girl roots. The Kinderwhore look consisted of "baby doll" dresses or nighties, heavy eye makeup, boots or mary- janes. Courtney Love of Hole says she was the first to popularize it. Others argue that it was actually Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland. Although one thing is for sure, these two both loved vintage baby doll dresses from the 70's, and they also met and grew up in the same music scene together. So was Japan so enamored by our music and its female images of that time, that that is how they began evolving this into what became Gothic Lolita?  Well in the 1990's in the Kansai region of northern Japan young women there too started wearing their own take on this doll-like fashion craze. Many say that their influence actually came from the band Malice Mizer. Their early musical themes were said to be characterized by strong classical and french themes, thus the victorian costumery they wore. Ok, I think its coming full circle now...their look was also known as "Visual kei". Which is a music genre, or a sub-genre of Japanese rock, with its own particular sound, related to glam rockpunk and metal. Their are also many stateside fans of Visual kei, and many of their representation of Visual kei fashion has also be referred to as Kindergoth.I guess well, there you have it. My results of tracing the origins of doll-like fashion. Debate away if you must and I'm sure some of you will, which is fine by me. In the meantime I have dresses to press and crinolines to starch.
